A US court has barred the government from banning the Chinese app WeChat.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, a US citizen who used WeChat had challenged the Trump administration’s order banning the application in court. According to British media, the Trump administration has declared WeChat a threat to national security, after which the US Department of Commerce announced a ban on the Chinese application on Sunday and it is being closed immediately.
In its ruling, the U.S. magistrate said the ban on Chinese messaging and payment application WeChat raises serious questions about the U.S. government’s First Amendment on freedom of expression. The US Department of Commerce has argued in court that blocking the president’s executive order would not only frustrate the president’s administration but also undermine the president’s commitment to better resolving national security issues.
The US Department of Commerce said in a statement that the decision to block the application was taken because of China’s data collection on US citizens. On the other hand, WeChat and the Chinese government have denied the Trump administration’s claim and called the US government’s decision unfortunate. It should be noted that the Trump administration has also banned the Chinese lip-syncing app Tik Tok, but Tik Tok has also challenged the US President’s move in court.
