Importance of folic acid in women

Women who DO NOT TAKE folic acid DAILY may have babies with brain defects, spinal cord defects, spinal bone defects, hearts defects, face defects, cleft lips, cleft palate, legs defects, bladder defects, genital defects, premature baby, low birth weight baby. Research has equally shown that babies that their breastfeeding mother takes folic acid, have a good behavior compared to children that their mother did not take folic acid. Folic acid is the synthetic form of Vitamin B9, also known as folate.

There are two main forms of vitamin B9.

Folate (the natural form) and folic acid (the synthetic form used in many supplements and fortified/enriched foods).Folic acid is an inexpensive synthetic version of the water-soluble vitamin. Everyone needs folic acid to be healthy. But it is especially important for women. In particular, red blood cell formation is dependent upon adequate levels of this vitamin. Your body needs folic acid to make normal red blood cells and prevent a type of anemia (folate-deficiency anemia). Folic acid deficiency is a known cause of anemia in both adults and children. A large study showed that women who consumed more folic acid had a significantly reduced risk of developing high blood pressure (hypertension). Folic acid protects unborn children against serious birth defects called neural tube defects. These birth defects happen in the first few weeks of pregnancy. Folic acid might also help prevent miscarriage. An abnormally small head, irritability, developmental delay, seizures, blindness and cerebellar ataxia can also be observed. In infants and children, folate deficiency can lead slow growth rate, diarrhea, oral ulcers, megaloblastic anemia, and neurological deterioration. Folate is found naturally in foods such as leafy green vegetables, oranges, and beans.Eat plenty of dark, leafy greens.

✔Add green vegetables like asparagus and broccoli to your diet.

✔Consume citrus fruits.

✔Eat folate-enriched items including starchy foods.
